Martin Short was brought up in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in a family of professionals. Father, Charles Patrick Short worked as an executive at the Canadian steel company, Stelco. His mother Olive Grace was the concertmistress of Hamilton Symphony Orchestra. He was brought up with four older siblings (David, Brian, Michael, and Nora).
Short has suffered a major personal tragedy at a tender age. In 1962 his older brother David died in a car crash. This was in the year 1968 when his mother died of breast cancer and his father later died in 1970 of a stroke.
Nevertheless, despite such huge personal losses, Short managed to graduate successfully. He graduated in 1971 after attending the Westdale Secondary School and joining the McMaster University where he got a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work.

Martin Short is an existing widower who was married to the late Canadian actress Nancy Dolman. The couple met in 1972 during the musical Godspell production and married on 22 December 1980. They had three children, Katherine Elizabeth (1983), Oliver Patrick (1986), and Henry Hayter (1989).
